Hummer Breakoff

In 40 Years of HUMVEE by Griffin Jones

Civilian Counterpart to the HUMVEE

As soon as the late 1980’s, AM General had planned to produce a civilian model, in part due to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s vocal support for it. By the 1990’s, AM General had developed its own civilian counterpart to the Humvee, the Hummer.

With a glossy finish and a host of additional comfort enhancements, civilians could finally purchase their very own Humvee. In 1999, GM purchased the branding rights, and later developed their own Hummer models, the H2 and H3 (the original Hummer model take on H1). By 2006, AM General had officially discontinued the H1 to focus solely on its military-grade vehicles.
