Armor Kit Upgrade

In 40 Years of HUMVEE by Griffin Jones

Iraq War and IED’s

In 2003, the U.S.-led coalition invaded Iraq. Insurgency continued to be a large problem in this conflict, including a new weapon: improvised explosive devices. The Humvees, although built to withstand small-arms fire, were now faced with a harsh reality of war they weren’t intended for at the time.

To combat this new threat, the Humvee was fitted with new armor kits designed to withstand more blast impact and better protect the occupants inside. As a result, the Humvees were better protected against such threats, but the increased weight limited their versatility for all-terrain travel.
